Evelyn M. Owens Breathwaite departed this life peacefully, Friday, March 30, 2018. Evelyn was born on April 28, 1923 in Princess Anne County, Virginia to the late Frank and Maud Owens; she was 94 years old. Evelyn graduated from Princess Anne County Training School June 1940, where she was also the class secretary. While in high school, Evelyn met John Rodney Breathwaite, who affectionately called her “Chum”. After graduation, she moved to Baltimore, Maryland to attend Cosmetology School, returning to Virginia Beach to marry the love of her life, John Rodney Breathwaite. To this union was born five sons and three daughters.They later adopted a daughter. Evelyn was a homemaker and worked as a beautician at home until her youngest child attended high school. She was then employed by the City of Virginia Beach and later retired after many years of service. Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband, John Breathwaite and two sons, John R. Breathwaite, Jr. and Larry T. Breathwaite, one daughter, Regina Y. Gallahan and her beloved adopted daughter, Sakinah Breathwaite. She leaves to cherish her memories, three sons and two daughters: Phillip F. Breathwaite (Barbeta) of Va. Beach; Bobby E. Breathwaite (Judy) of California; Wayne A. Breathwaite of Chesapeake; Maude E. Moore (Robert) of Suffolk, Portia R. Derricks (Cleavant) of California, along with two brothers and two sisters: Floyd Owens of Chesapeake and Mervyn Owens (Kim) of California; Elsie M. Brown and Madeline E. Wade of Virginia Beach; 30 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, 10 great-great grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends. God has called her home. John Rodney has been waiting for a long time for his “Chum” to be with him again…..
