“Something is Better Than Nothing”... “Aunt Jeri”, “Nana”, “Ms. Jessie”, Ms.Gray, “ Jesse Byrd”, Mommie, GrandMa,… Jessie Celeste White Gray- the first “Diva Of West Munden”, was the third child born on July 30, 1939, to the late Jesse White , and his loving bride, the late Alice Lamb White of Norfolk County / West Munden, now known as Chesapeake, Va. She transitioned from this earthly life and gained her “Angel Wings”, on Wednesday March 21, 2018. She was also predeceased by her oldest sister Beverly White Jackson, her younger brother, William (Bill) White, husband’s George Wilcox and George Gray. Jessie attended George Washington Carver High School in Chesapeake, and after graduation she moved to Brooklyn, New York, where she lived for over 40 years-before moving back here to Virginia. As a child she was an active member of First Baptist Church –West Munden, and upon her return to Va. She became a faithful member of Bute Street Baptist Church in Norfolk, until her health began to fail. Jessie Celeste-- affectionately referred to herself as “Jessie C”. , was a beautiful proud woman-very stately & equally stylish. She had a sweet smile & an infectious laugh. But her greatest attribute and the things she was most proud of were her “Big Beautiful Legs!” When she walked into a room, sat down, and crossed those big legs of hers…”it was over… whatever you were talking about, or doing at the time, came to a screeching halt- and all eyes were on those gorgeous legs!” She loved to shop for treasures & used her inherited craftiness (from her Mother), to reinvent-refurbish & redesign her finds, because she passionately loved to decorate. She enjoyed life. She was lively, friendly & helpful, and a giver. Whenever she would give the Grandchildren a gift- her favorite saying to them was “Something is better than nothing”. She exhibited her love for people by helping in the community and through her work at the Chesapeake Redevelopment & Housing Authority, where she worked for over 20 years, and at the Portsmouth Redevelopment & Housing Authority, where she worked for 8 years. *“She fought a good fight…she kept the faith”…Jessie leaves a “Legacy of Love & Cherished Memories” to her four beautiful daughters-Adrienne, Anita, Robin (Sam), and Joy (Carlyle). Two Son-in-Laws, Sam Williams & Carlyle Smith. Six (6) Grandchildren; Deja’, Jade’, Aaron, Ari, Amber, and Cameryn. Four (4) Great Grandchildren; Aarya, Xailia, Izaiah, and Selena. Three (3) sisters; Nelda, Alice (Pat), and Vera, and a great host of other loving relatives & compassionate friends. Her memory will live on forever…*

Misha & Greg Bennett On behalf of the World Changers Church Brooklyn Family, we send our love and prayers to Ms. Jessie and loved ones during this time. Trusting God that you will find comfort and peace in His Amazing Grace, because this separation is only temporary. This is according to God's Promise: "To be absent from this body, is to be present with the Lord" 2 Cor. 5:8. So we can take this time to celebrate with all of you—the victory we have in Christ—knowing that we will see her again! God Bless you all!
