Deacon Irvin Hendrick Sr., was born April 26, 1921 to the late Sam Hendrick and Susie Harrison Boyd in Brunswick County, Virginia. Irvin departed this earthly life on January 9, 2018 in his home surrounded by his caregivers. Irvin retired in 1977 after 34 years of working for Norfolk Naval Shipyard as a Shop 41 Boiler Maker. Irvin attended Abraham Lincoln School in Norfolk, VA. Irvin was a senior deacon at Mt. Zion Baptist Church. He received several honors and awards on his job and in his service to his church. Irvin was also a member of the Mass Choir, Male Chorus and taught Sunday school for several years. Irvin loved to sing, he was a faithful 2nd tenor with the “Les Chanteurs Glee Club.” He would often serenade anyone that he met, friend or stranger. “I’ll See You In My Dreams” Irvin is predeceased by his wives, Grace Hendrick and Justine Hendrick; siblings, Lewis Hendrick, Deliann Shaw, Elizabeth Coffey, Thomas Lee Hendrick, Idell Shaw, Cora Pamer, Eldobea, Benjamin Hendricks, Geraldine Short and Stevania Bess; daughters, Sara Tompkins, Juanita Carillo and Susanne Turner; grandchildren Eric Hendrick, Jerry Gilbert and great grandchild, Gregory Perry Jr. He is survived by 5 daughters, Helen Ballard, Ruth Gilbert, Gracie Williams of New York Adell Hawkins of Norfolk and Marcell Baugh (Luke) of Maryland; 2 sons, Irvin Hendrick Jr. of Norfolk and Charles T. Hendrick (Brenda) of Chesapeake; a sister, Mable Lee Carson of New York; 3 brothers, Plummer Hendricks (Emily) of Norfolk, Stevenson Hendricks (Martha) of New Jersey and Jimmy Hendricks; 2 special grandchildren, Sharon Hendrick and Carnell Hendrick; 26 grandchildren; 48 great grandchildren; 9 great great grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
