Helen McWilliams Griggs completed all of her earthly assignments and transitioned to her New Home in Glory on July 17, 2017. She was born in Enfield, NC on February 21, 1928 to the late George and Corena McWilliams. Helen joined Wayman AME Church in Enfield at the age of 11 and was active in Sunday School and other ministries. She was a 1947 graduate of Eastman High School in Enfield, and a proud graduate of North Carolina A&T State University, class of 1951 with a degree in Business Education. While attending A&T, she was active in almost every aspect of campus life. Her actions, enthusiasm, and gracefulness caught the eye of a young man from Norfolk, VA, William Griggs, Jr. now deceased. William and Helen married on July 26, 1952 in Enfield and planted roots in Norfolk, VA as their home town. In 1953, Helen accepted a position with the Shipping Department at the Norfolk Naval Supply Center. She left her civil service career in 1968 to begin work as a teacher with the Norfolk Public School System where she taught Mathematics, History, English and Shorthand. In 1975, Helen accepted a teaching position with Norfolk Business College where she taught Dictation, Accounting, Typing, and Gregg Shorthand. In 1981, Helen returned to the Naval Supply Center as Supervisor of Shipping and retired in 1986. In 1989, Helen joined a pilot program with EVMS called the Resource Mothers Program. Their mission was to provide guidance and counsel to new mothers who faced challenges and difficulties in rearing their children. She took clients to WIC appointments, Pediatrician appointments, and Social Service appointments. She assisted the mother with proper nutrition, bathing and general care for their children. While with the Resource Mothers, she made an appearance in 1993 on WAVY-TV 10's News Program, The Bottom Line. From 1986-2010, Helen unselfishly completed over 25 years of volunteer service with the Norfolk Senior Center, and was recognized by the Virginian Pilot in 2007 for 20 years of volunteer service withing the city of Norfolk. Helen was a faithful member of Shiloh Baptist Church for over 55 years where she served as a Sunday School Teacher, Missionary, Hospitality Committee Member, and the Baptist Women. Helen was a founding member of the Tidewater Chapter of North Carolina A&T State University Alumni Association. In her over 60-plus years as a member of this organization, she served as president, vice president, and secretary, and treasurer. She worked with scholarship committees, fund raising committees recruitment committees and a host of other assignments when called to serve. She is survived by her 6 grandchildren, Gwendolyn Ferguson, Charlottesville, VA, William, II (Patrice), Norfolk, VA, Angela Franklin, Mount Laurel, NJ, Warren (Sheryl) Norfolk, VA, Clyde (Sharon), Dacula, GA and George of Norfolk. She also leaves to cherish her memory eight (8) grandchildren, Herbert (Kimberly), Traci, Alexander, Lauren, Neil Jr, Daria, Lauryn, and Claudia; one (1) great granddaughter, Melanie; several nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.

Barbara Hayes To the family, I extend my deepest and most heartfelt sympathy on the passing of your beloved. I worked with Helen many years ago at the Freight Terminal Dept. on the naval base. I remember her very fondly as being a beautiful, caring, kind, generous, and delightful person. May God bless you all.
