Herbert Askew was born on January 17, 1954 in Norfolk, VA. He went home to glory on Wednesday, July 26, 2017. He was a lifelong Norfolk resident who attended Booker T. Washington High School, had an extensive career with General Electric (GE), and was a retiree of Marine Hydraulics International, LLC. He was preceded in death by his parents, Bertha Moore Askew Williams and Alphonso Askew; and a sister, Evelyn Payton. He was a loving husband, father, brother and friend. He was an avid sports person. One of his favorite things to do was play basketball non-stop with his Uncle Lewis and brother Billy Back. They would travel around the city playing basketball and defeating everyone they came across. He was a true football fan who loved the Indianapolis Colts. One of our fondest memories of Herbert was how he had that blue Cutlass Supreme that he refused to get rid of. The car became so raggedy that the roof fabric began to fall. Instead of getting rid of the car he began stapling and tacking the fabric back up to the roof. “He still thought that car was a classic”. He will forever be remembered by the family as a “dancer”, “a ball player”, and “the person who didn’t go anywhere without his Polaroid camera”. He is survived by his wife, Benita Askew; a son, Herbert Gibbs (Erica); two daughters, Latosha Thompson (Ken), and Sierra Harris; five brothers, Al Whaff, Billy “Back” Fenner (LeeAnn), Clinton “Lil Bro” Langley, Alonzo “Tim” Askew, and Anthony Askew, Sr (Linda); four sisters, Barbara Alexander, Ruby Ighodaroeregie, Rena “Baby Doll” Guillory (Robert), and Angel Askew; 9 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, aunts, uncles, a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends. With Herbert’s passing we shall always be reminded that his life is one to be celebrated. Although we will miss him every day, especially his smile, his walk, the dancing, and his frugalness, he will always and forever remain in our hearts. We are forever grateful that we created wonderful memories of our loving husband, father, brother, and friend.

Vondra Bailey Selden Thoughts and prayers are with Barbara and family. May you always have wonderful memories to share with others.
