Eli Jones III affectionately called Sweetie, Man, Big Tate was born on June 2, 1968 in Portsmouth, VA and took his wings on 5 March 2018 in Norfolk VA. Man leaves to mourn his father Eli Jones Jr. and his mother Carolyn Cumbo Mitchell, his sister Tina L. Jones and his loving brother Kevin L. Jones (Yrrale), two nephews Rajee and Jaylen Jones, three nieces Brittany, Alexis, Aniya Jones, grandniece Arianna Jones Hardy, and special friends Shanaka Jones and Ms. Emily Prileau. He leaves to mourn also his Grandmother Elsie Hamlin Jones, his aunts Sylvia Cumbo Bishop (NY) Flora Alethea Cumbo, Veronica Denise Williamson, Barbara Cumbo Jackson, Wilma Jones, Juanita Jones and Hortense Jones of Portsmouth, VA, six uncles Danielle Cumbo (Chesapeake), Toney Cumbo (Portsmouth), Charles Cumbo of Hampton, VA Milton, Freddie and Maurice Jones of Chesapeake VA. Sweetie/Big Tate was preceded in death by his sister Tracey Diane Jones, Grandparents William Samuel Cumbo (Sam), Florida Mason Cumbo and Eli Jones Sr to include his Uncle Mason Jordan Cumbo (Jerry) (Poughkeepsie, NY), Sammy Cumbo (Portsmouth, VA) and his Auntie Mildred Jones Porter of Portsmouth, VA. Big Tate loved everyone he met and took pride in joking and smiling with his many nieces, nephews, cousins and his host of friends and relatives. He touched everyone he met and took great pride in cooking for his family and friends and providing jokes and wisdom to all who needed it. He gave his all to anyone who needed him and will always be remembered for accepting everyone no matter what their race, financial status or problem. Everyone will remember some cute jokes or phrases he used and his favorite oldies but goodies and his music. He will be missed by all because he loved to cook, smile, tell jokes and fix gourmet dinners. His legacy lives on in our hearts. He possessed a humorous powerful presence, he was the peacemaker in family situations most often even if he started them and was passionate in his love for others. We are honored that God has blessed us with such a loving compassionate spiritual mentor. Special in his heart was his love for his gang in Mount Hermon and the I.C. Norcom Class of 1988 in Portsmouth, VA and they loved Big Tate! We love you too Sweetie, rest in peace.
