Hester Mae Johnson, 88, died December 29, 2017 with her daughters by her side in Portsmouth, Virginia. She was born October 4, 1929 in Wollaston, Virginia and she was preceded in death by her father brothers, Henderson, James, Linwood and Norman Eason. Hester would eventually meet the love of her life, Horace Solomon Johnson, and have a family which consisted of ten children. Hester was an active member of Baptist Rock, Baptist Church in Chesapeake, Virginia, where she often served as an organist, and sang in the adult choir. She eventually moved to Norfolk, Virginia to live with her son. Her interest included family gatherings, music, gardening, needlepoint and quilt making. She devoted most of her time caring of her ten children and other family members. Oftentimes, her love would reach beyond the immediate family to care for strangers along the way. Hester is survived by two siblings; sisters, Mary E. Bernard; brother, William Eason; ten children, Lorraine Leach, Phillip Johnson, Ora Bynum, Herbert Johnson, James Johnson, Eleanor (Stanley) Satterfield, Dennis (Linda) Johnson, Cynthia (Reese) Phifer, Larry Johnson, Matthew Johnson and Jimmy Scurry and Yolander (Alvin) Ashburn, whom she lovingly called her children. She also leaves behind a host of grand and great grandchildren.
