On Thursday, January 25th, 2018, Barbara Jean Patillo 86, passed away in Boone, NC. A former resident of Norfolk, Virginia she worked many years at DePaul Medical Center and Sentara Norfolk General Hospital from which she retired. She was a faithful member of Bibleway Apostolic Church. She is survived by one daughter, Ericka Jean Patillo.

Pam Auntie, as I sit here thinking about all the things you’ve said to me and thought me. I feel like I have some how failed you. I promised you that I would call on a weekly basis and I let this wicked system of Satan derail that promise. I was not even aware of the fact that you had another stroke! and was in Rehad. I am so sorry Auntie, I wish I could change the hands of time but I can’t and now I must live with this guilt. I know you would say that it is okay. I can hear your sweet voice saying “ Pam... you are so busy child, you have a lot going on and you handle it so well, I don’t know how you do it girl....with a chuckle!” Well, if I had just a small portion of your knowledge and organizational skills and love for helping others, I would consider myself totally accomplished. Your had such an impact on so many peoples lives Auntie, it makes me feel even more special to remember the times we Lay on your bed talking and watching TV, laughing at the silly things I did and how much I have grown. I will, as long as I live, cherish the moments and the conversations we shared. I will always love you Auntie. You hold a special place in my heart. Love Always, Pam

Pamela Smith Barbara Jean Patillo, my Auntie as I fondly call her, is a one of a kind. She unselfishly shared her time and love with us military personnel by providing unconditional love to our young ones while we were deployed. As a single mother, I never had to worry about my child being mistreated. Auntie, I have NEVER met anyone like you and trust me, I have been around the world. You have the ability to make someone feel like they are the most important person to you when you are in conversation with them. When I first met you, my self esteem was very low, you sat me down every evening and build my self esteem up by telling me how beautiful I was, how smart I was, how much courage it took to accomplish what I did, before I knew, I was graduating with my MBA. She continued to praised me. Oh Auntie, my love for you is stronger than that many of my blood relative. You have stolen my heart and now my heart aches, knowing you are in a better place. I am the one who is suffering, who will I call when I need some to comfort me, to give me guidance, those good old comforting words of wisdom! Oh Auntie you will no longer be there to pick up the phone when I call. My heart heart aches to hear that voice again. With love forever, Pam....💔

Faith Gaines Ms. Barbara Patillo, whom I had referred to as “Auntie,” has changed my life in many ways. She was one of my caretakers, my spiritual leader, and my counselor. Auntie was one of the few people who truly understood what I was going through in all of the different situations occurring in my life. She always offered me sound advice that had benefited me to this day. I just wish I could thank her one last time for all that she has done for me. I will never forget her laugh that frequently rewinds in my head, nor the countless amount of times she told me she was proud of the decisions I was making in my life. Thank you, Auntie, for contributing to the woman who I am today. I love you with every fiber in my being.
