Betty or Bet (as she was affectionately called), was born in Jackson, North Carolina. She came to know and love God at an early age. Bet was educated in the Portsmouth Public School System. She attended S.H. Clarke, graduated from I.C. Norcom High School and later completed barber school. Next to singing to her children, she had a passion for cooking, decorating and shopping. Bet worked for Head Start/ The STOP Organization/Hampton Roads Community Action Program (HRCAP). She met the nutritional needs of pre-school aged children for 41 years. She was also, like a mother figure to many of the children. She loved what she did so much, she often talked about returning to work, even during her sickness. Two of her students were her son Eugene and grandson Diontre Southall. She was often rewarded for her outstanding leadership abilities. She also loved to cook for her family and friends during the holidays. She is preceded in death by her parents Claxton Leo Roberts and Nettie Mae Simon Roberts. Bet leaves behind two daughters; Angela Y. Roberts, Gloria Southall and son Eugene Caniely; six siblings; Patricia Ann Watkins (Gary), Edward Leo Roberts, Sherry Roberts, Janice Hilliard, Winford Junior Robert and Toniette Bynum (Reginald); nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren; a host of nieces, nephews and other beloved family members. Betty cherished her many special friends and co-workers.

Julie Greene I am so sorry for your loss. Having worked with Betty for the past 5 1/2 years I came to truly understand her spirit. What a wonderful person she was. She will be greatly missed. She had a smile ready for everyone that walked into the kitchen. Keeping you all in my thoughts and prayers as you go through this tough time please take comfort in knowing that Betty is no longer suffering. Praying God will guide you and give you strength and peace.

The Edmonds Family We send you our deepest sympathy. Words cannot console when we have lost someone we love in death. The Bible brings us much comfort. The Bible at Revelation 21:3, 4,states that God will do away with all cause we have for suffering, as well as sickness and death. Knowing this has always comforted us and it is our hope that this thought will comfort you and your family as well.

Aletra Spivey-Athey I had the pleasure to meet Ms. Southall at Churchland Head Start. She was such a sweet and caring lady. She made sure that I had something to eat on the days that the menu called for fish. The memories of her will forever be in my heart. My condolences to the Southall family. May God give you strength at this difficult time.

Darryl A. Boykins On behalf of my wife, Felita and I, we would like to convey our prayers and condolences to Betty's family. I found it such a blessing in working with Betty over these past 8 years in the kitchen for Head Start. Your smile, pleasantness, kindness and support just a joy to work with a person like Betty. We, the kitchen, will greatly miss you but we have the peace in knowing you are in a better place. May the Angel of the Lord strengthen and comfort your family. God Bless!
