Patsy Cruciano I had the pleasure of hearing Senator Miller speak my first day of student teaching. Her words and passion for the craft of teaching forever changed my philosophy of education. She believed that children were not only to be taught academia, but how to be good people as well. I am so saddened to hear of her passing. She was a wonderful advocate of children and education and I am so fortunate to have been influenced by her wisdom. My thoughts are with her family during this difficult time.

Mrs. Jordan To The Family, I want to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. I also want to share the comfort of John 5:28,29 where we are promised that those who have fallen asleep in death have the hope of receiving a "resurrection" back to life. Life on an earth restored to a beautiful paradise. Psalms 37:11 says, "The meek ones themselves will possess the earth, and they will indeed find their exquisite delight in the abundance of peace." While we await that wonderful time please find comfort in these promises.

Joyce Brown Linyear My condolences go out to Senator Miller’s family and to all who knew and loved her. I am very thankful and feel especially blessed to have been taught by Ms Miller in 1st grade at Young’s Park Elementary School. She was my favorite teacher and instilled positive values then and later throughout my adult life. She was a very wise, yet humble woman of God. Senator Miller’s life was a genuine demonstration of the fruit of the Spirit: “But what happens when we live God's way? He brings gifts into our lives, much the same way that fruit appears in an orchard—things like affection for others, exuberance about life, serenity. We develop a willingness to stick with things, a sense of compassion in the heart, and a conviction that a basic holiness permeates things and people. We find ourselves involved in loyal commitments, not needing to force our way in life, able to marshal and direct our energies wisely.” Galatians 5:22-23 The Message (MSG) Senator Miller, I thank you for emulating the heart of a servant; for loving and caring about all people; especially those who were often neglected or forgotten by others. Thank you for being the vessel of honor whom God used to demonstrate His love and compassion toward those who needed your help and for doing as you said in your own words- “Never missing the opportunity to do the right thing.” May God be glorified for all that He has done through Senator Miller’s life and ministry.

Eleanor Stith Watson Senator Yvonne Miller, I know Senator Yvonne Miller from my childhood. She served in the Mother Church of God in Chist in Norfolk, Va. I attended her "Purity Class" on Tuesdays where she would allow us teens to express ourselves. She taught us about the birds and bees. Senator Miller was old enough to have our respect yet young enough for us to relate. My mother, the late Dorothy B Stith and Senator Miller were friends in God and man. She looked up to my mother and because of that Senator Miller became our role model. Senator Miller came from a family of 13 and we shared that because I came from a large family also. We loved her, so. I am sure she will be missed by the Senate. She made a mark for women and especially "Black" women and men. I send my condolences on behalf of the "Stith" family of Norfolk, VA. Sorrowful, Eleanor Watson The Stith Family of Norfolk Virginia

Kelle Stewart, J.D. I am so touched to learn that P.B. Young, the school where I did observations for my Elem. Ed. certification, was the same place the Honorable Senator Miller first began her lifelong pursuit of justice and equity for our children. There was a palpable sense of warmth and love throughout that building. I will never forget it. Senator Miller's loss is doubly painful because it reminds us that our children need leaders like her now more than they ever have before. She educated the "whole-child" in the truest sense. She set to work remedying the greater ills of society, to give children healthier communities in which they could grow. She is a powerful example of Faith, Love, and Sisterhood in the realm of Servant Leadership. Her life will continue to serve as one of our greatest sources of inspiration. Whenever we face a difficult day in the General Assembly, we will remember her life lessons, pick ourselves up and never stop fighting on behalf of our children.

Bernice Taylor Anderson Today we give special thanks to Almighty God and the Bond family for sharing your beloved Senator Yvonne B. Miller with a world of friends and admirers. With deepest sympathy, our thoughts and prayers are with you on this day as you celebrate the life of a gifted and faithful servant. Senator Miller was richly blessed by God and in turn she blessed others with her compassion, respect, generosity and wisdom. She has left a legacy for us to cherish and a charge for us to be committed in doing what is right for every generation of Americans. As a role model/mentor and a supervisor with extraordinary leadership skills, Professor Miller influenced me and many others involved in the Norfolk State Teacher Corps to strive for excellence and make a positive difference through our careers, social endeavors, and civic responsibilities. We give praise and thanks to the Lord for revealing to us through Senator Miller the meaning of “present your bodies a living sacrifice, holy, acceptable unto God, which is your reasonable service” (Ro.12:1). She is loved, and she will be missed but we know that she is now in the presence of a loving, merciful and gracious God.

Thursa and Flora Crittenden To the Family and Friends of Senator Yvonne B. Miller - We were deeply saddened to learn about the passing of our beloved Yvonne. While her strong voice resounding in the Halls of the Virginia Senate will not be heard again, her dedicated service to her constituents and the citizens of Virginia has been written in the annals of time. No one worked harder or sacrificed more than Senator Miller to achieve her goals as an elected official. She always pushed forward for equality and justice. Indeed, Senator Miller made Virginia a good place to live, work and raise a family. The Bible reminds us "Blessed are they that mourn: for they shall be comforted." As time diminishes your grief, may your memories of Senator Miller give you much comfort, joy and delight. Give thanks to God for the wonderful life she lived. Jane Bethel, President NAGE Local 04-200 Senator Yvonne B. Miller was a beautiful, strong woman of faith, courage, conviction, and who had a passion for people. She was a role model for young and old alike and one of Virginia’s great leaders. Senator Miller will be sorely missed. I pray that her family and friends take comfort in knowing that she has gone to her eternal home in heaven, and for those who have a relationship with Christ, we will see her again. I met Senator Miller at the Norfolk Democratic Committee breakfasts, and would look forward to hearing her speak each month – a powerful, passionate speaker who could fire up a crowd. Senator Miller’s accomplishments for education, for people with disabilities, for the disadvantaged are well known. She was also a champion for labor and a friend to unions. The City of Norfolk employee union, NAGE Local 04-200, honored Senator Miller with a “Legislator of the Year” plaque in 2009 for her sponsorship of SB1529 that gave public employees the right to be politically active. Senator Miller’s legacy lives on in the many lives she touched. A life well lived, well done Senator Miller.

William Dove Williams Yvonne and I grew up together in the "Mother" Church. Even as a teen, there was no guikle found in the mouth of the girl I loved growing up. She is and was a champion exemplifying the Christian values we were taught; to lift our homes, families,Churches and communities, bringing her learned abilities right to the neighborhood in which she lived. I'll always love her.

Those of us who knew her know that she was one of God's Angels and and earth crusader for fairness, recognition of our collective responsibility to help each other, and the restoration of invidual rights for people who served their time in prison. Ms. Darveen M. Brodie Senator Yvonne B. Miller A trailblazer, trend setter, and Woman Pioneer has gone home to be with her Lord and Savior. She did everything on Earth she could do to assist God in Educating us. First Woman to Chair a Senate Committee. Visted and worked on different issues from City to City. Beautiful, Bold and Bright, if the issue was right, Senator Miller gave them a good fight! She loved kids with all her heart. She would read to them, encourage them and tell them they were smart, she knew what our children needed so she fought for their rights with all her heart. The Senator had a very keen spiritual discernment also. If you came around her with the wrong spirit, Senator Miller would let you know. So all of you Ladies and Gents, that are in the political world take lessons from this Beautiful, African American Woman that fought for justice with blood, sweat and tears most of her life. DiAnne C. Montgomery DiAnne C. Montgomery To the Family of Senator Yvonne Miller - another jewel has been called to our Father's Home from your family. Senator Miller has been one of the finest role models and mentors in my life for many years. Once she found out who my mother and father were - she always made me reach to new heights in any endeavor. I could call on her ANYTIME. When she called you "Gorgeous" you knew she had some more talk for you and it has made me a stronger woman because of those conversations - she assisted me in a Leadership Academy with NRHA for 8 1/2 years and her sister Carolyn and husband Bruce assisted me for 16 years for FUN DAY - Her number was a speed dial away I always knew I could count on one of the three to get me through any task or project with encouragement. Senator Miller's kindness will never be taken for granted and now her and Carolyn are able to enjoy the fruits of their labor in a better place and never hurt again. God Bless each of You - He Who Is He will give you an abundance of strength because you have a fine legacy and I am sure beautiful memories as I - I can hear her saying in that special voice tone "I am All Right - Happy Birthday Senator Miller, You are truly FREE from hurt and harm- you will not have to study this war anymore - we have to now live up to the standards of your advocacy and your activism. Roshawnda Johnson The Honorable Senator Yvonne B. Miller will truly be missed at and by the P. B. Young, Sr. Elementary family. She at one time taught at our school. She was known to say, "I may have left PBY physically but my heart stayed". We all know this to be true. She was a very strong supporter of our children, school, families and community. She was always telling others about "her school". She believed strongly in our children and will always be remembered for her passion. Because of her passion and desire to see our children excel, she founded the Annual Senator Yvonne B. Miller Math Bowl, supported our events and held an appreciation breakfast for the parents of every student. Our children are on a journey as mathematical scholars because of her partnership with us. Her many acts of kindness and love are far too many to list. P. B. Young, Sr. Elementary held a special place in her heart and she was a major part of the PBY family. We lost a valuable family member but her spirit will always remain with us. To the family we offer our most sincere condolences. Thank you for sharing her with us. Senator Miller, Thank you for your dedication, love and faith in all of us. Rest on for your race was well ran and your journey spanned from heart to heart.

Dr. Stefan Goodwin Senator Yvonne Miller (whose youthful nicknames were also Delores and Shorty) was a very good friend of mine since at least my teenage years when she was in some respects almost like an adopted member of my Goodwin family. Because I depart Virginia over half a century ago, we were not in contact as often as I would have liked. In fact, I still have photos of her for her from the 1960s. In addition to both my parents who are now desceased, Yvonne or Delores was also much beloved by my sisters Dr. Delores Goodwin Kelley (for a long time, a Maryland State Senator), Dr. Norma Goodwin (for a long time a Brooklyn, NY physician, and Mrs. Barabar Goodwin Cuffie (an educator and computer security expert in Baltimore). My love for Yvonne will be eternal. RIP, dear friend. Dr. Stefan Cornelius Goodwin, anthropologist and author.

I did not know her personally, but used to see her out and about around town, especially the Family Dollar Store on Church Street. She was always so kind, pleasant, nice and smiling. She was the most sweetest, charming lady around. Who else on the Senate is going to fight for the little folk, the less fortunate, etc.? The answer is NO ONE!!! There will NEVER be another one like her. To God be the Glory for sending her our way. Prayers to you all

Rebecca Lucas I am very sorry for the loss of Senator "Grandma" Miller as a fellow lobbyist and I lovingly referred to her as. When I began lobbying in January , not being known by the house or senate many doors were closed to me , and a few had time to hear me out , but Sen. Miller! She came over to me while I was trying to make an appt. with her leg. aide , and said "I always have time, please come in my office I would love to hear what's on your mind. Later, she had her aide to take a photo of me behind her desk. I was deeply touched by her compassion, and I cried as I left her office thinking "why couldn't all politicians have a heart like hers." She had a humbleness , and I would have never guessed she was battling cancer. As I sat behind her desk, she said to me this past January, "I can't do this forever, someone needs to take my place , and it may as well be another woman" Until that time, politics had never crossed my mind , but she planted a seed. The key chain that she gave me is now even more of an inspiration than ever. My heat is crushed and I am so very sorry for your loss , and am very honored to have met her. Rebecca Lucas

Diana Chappell-Lewis My heart felt condolences to the family of Senator Yvonne Miller - she was indeed a champion for social justice. I have known and loved her since the late 70's, she always supported the African Feast that we sponsored at NSU to raise funds for the movement in southern Africa. When we launched a campaign against the Death penalty in VA, she signed the petition and gave voice to that cause. I remember too, how proud the students at Anne's Beauty Academy were that she always got her hair done there. She walked among the giants and the masses with equal respect and grace. Marcella Germanotta I was saddened to hear the news of Senator Yvonne Miller's passing. There will be a great void in Virginia's leadership. As someone who has worked to bring leadership opportunites to young women, I found that she, too, was dedicated to that mission. She was a strong supporter of Girl Scouts and their leadership goals, and she became a Girl Scout member of Troop Capitol Square in Richmond. In 2009, the Girl Scout Council of Colonial Coast honored her with the Woman of Courage, Confidence and Character Award. When speaking to Girl Scouts, she would encourage them to pursue higher educaiton and applauded their interest in challenging fields, such as science, engineering and technology. An inspirational speaker, she left listeners eager to achieve their dreams. She will be remembered as an exceptional person with a giving spirit. Her determination brings a Mayo Angelou quote to mind, "I believe the most important something beyond dicipline and creativity is daring to dare."

Doris Crouse-Mays, President Virginia AFL-CIO This week, we lost a dear friend and true trailblazer: Senator Yvonne Miller. She made history as the first African American woman to serve in the House of Delegates and, later, State Senate. Senator Miller spent her life fighting for the little guy and giving voice to the voiceless. Whenever someone came to visit her office in Richmond, she would have a picture taken with them sitting behind her desk, saying, “Please sit in your chair.” She never forgot where she came from. DiAnne C. When she called you "Gorgeous" you knew she had some more talk for you and it has made me a stronger woman because of those conversations - she assisted me in a Leadership Academy with NRHA for 8 1/2 years and her sister Carolyn and husband Bruce assisted me for 16 years for FUN DAY - Jer number was a speed dial away I always knew I could count on one of the three to get me through any task or project with encouragement. Tracy Mason Senator Miller was a beautiful woman and a gift from God to me, whom I loved dearly. She was my second mother and I admired her so. I met Senator Miller years ago when she was working with Head Start and Early Childhood Programs. I was ordered to do community service, she took me under her wings and molded me into the woman I am today. She was my mother, my role model, my mentor and my friend. Senator Miller was there for me and my children’s graduations, birthday parties, even my battle with cancer. I hold such fond memories’ we shared together. I am going to miss our lunch and dinner dates and long conversations. RIP mommy you are truly loved the kids and I am going to miss you dearly.

Julius E. McCullough I am so saddened at the passing, on yesterday, of Senator Yvonne B. Miller. She meant so much to me and to so many others who have benefited from her service and devotion. She was a great supporter and benefactor of the Boys Choir of Hampton Roads. She was always present at their concerts and could always be heard to say, "These are my boys". She was proud to know and see that "Her Boys" were involved in positive activities. She was there to support them and encouraged others to follow her example. She not only spoke of her love, she demonstrated that love through her many generous acts of giving. She was a champion of the people and an advocate for the education of our youth. God's Kingdom shines brighter, today, with the addition of this wonderful Angel. The irreplaceable Senator Yvonne B. Miller will be greatly missed. Julius E. McCullough, Artistic Director Boys Choir of Hampton Roads

Charniele Herring (46th District), House Minority Whip This remarkable woman is an inspiration to so many. Service to her memory can be accomplished by continuing her work for our disadvantaged. “And the King shall answer and say unto them, Verily I say unto you, Inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me”. Matthew 25:40. Farewell, Senator you are now and forever in a higher office with our Father. God bless you.
