Willie Edward Barnes, 91, born in Pitt County, NC, September 11, 1926, to the late King David Barnes and Sally Randolph Barnes, passed January 18, 2018, surrounded by his family. Willie built a home for his family in the mid-sixties in the Deep Creek area of Chesapeake, VA, becoming a well-known neighborhood fixture for more than fifty years. Willie Barnes enjoyed his career as a Member of the International Longshoremen Association (ILA) Local 1970 until retirement. He was an active member of the former Ebenezer Church or God in Christ, as well as the Greater Deep Creek Elks Lodge 1033 for many years. He loved repairing cars, entertaining friends, sharing memorable toasts on memorable occasions, and generally helping others any way he could. Barnes is predeceased by his wife Doris Stephens Barnes, daughter Carol Barnes-Hightower, and siblings Columbus Barnes, Mary Christine Parson, Ruenella Barnes, and David Barnes, Jr. He leaves to cherish his memories: children, Emma Godley, Greenville, NC; Marietta B. Cowart, Virginia Beach; Willie Donell Barnes, Atlanta, GA; Adreon Carlet Barnes and Jeffrey Barnes (Darlene), Chesapeake; Emily D. Barnes (Neil Hoffman), Washington, DC; siblings Joseph Barnes of Peekskill, NY; Ecclesiastes Barnes (Deborah), New Haven, CT; Moses Barnes (Lydia); Hezekiah “Jimmie” Barnes, Greenville, NC; and Araminta Williams, New Haven, CT; five grandchildren, five great grandchildren, a great-great grandchild, loving relatives, and friends.
