On February 6, 2018 Elizabeth Katherine Saunders Cuffee, 96, received her wings and was called home to rest after a short illness. She began her beautiful life journey on June 30, 1921 in Norfolk, VA to the late Fred Saunders, Sr. and the late Flora Freeman Saunders. She was the eldest of two children. Elizabeth received her education at St. Joseph Catholic School. She later met and married Otis Cuffee and out of that union was blessed with thirteen children. Elizabeth was affectionately known a La, Luba and Luva. She was a loving, faithful and dedicated mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great great grandmother, cousin and friend. La was a silent but strong and proud woman whom after her husband’s death in 1968. Living through depression, raised and cared for her children with the assistance of her eldest son Otis Saunders Cuffee. La was not only a mother to her children but a mother to the community in Grandy Park. In her earlier years, she was president of the Grandy Park Senior Club and received an award for Senior & Disabled services in 2002. Elizabeth was a faithful Christian and a member of the Golden Age Support Group at Bethany Baptist Church. La loved shopping, her favorite store was JC Penny. She was famous for her hats and caring a pocketbook, which she loved putting money in. She loved family gatherings that were held at her house. She enjoyed watching news, lifetime, and soap operas. One of her favorite shows was the Price Is Right. She was the matriarch and glue of the family. Elizabeth was predeceased by her husband, Otis Cuffee; her brother, Fred Saunders, Jr. and three daughters, Katherine Cuffee, Gloria “Sister” Cuffee and Florene “Glosell” Foreman. She leaves to cherish her memory, six sons, Otis “Phenny” Saunders (Iora), George Cuffee (Carolyn), Melvin “Poochie” Cuffee, Charles “Sam” Cuffee, Jean Jerome Cuffee (Zella), Tony “Fish” Cuffee all of Norfolk, VA; three daughters, Gracie Cuffee of New York, Shirley Simms and Evelyn Bailey of Norfolk, VA. She also raised two grandchildren, Simone Cuffee and Carolyn “Lannette” Cuffee and a host of grandchildren and cousins. A special cousin, Grace Means.
