On December 3, 1929, Charlie Morgan and Laura Ethel Carter Cutis Morgan gave birth to Annie Lucille Morgan, and on January 15, 2018, Annie Lucille Morgan Williams Ellison Barnard transitioned to her Heavenly Home. She reunited with parents, her husband, her granddaughter, Tamara Stephanie Fuqua; her grandson, Adrian Dominic Miles; her aunt, Lydia Stallings, and many other family and friends who are blessed to enter His Kingdom. “Mummy” was born and raised in Norfolk, Virginia. After attending the Thyne Institute Boarding School located in Mecklenburg County, Virginia during her formative years, she returned to Norfolk to complete her education at Booker T. Washington High School. One of Mummy’s first jobs was a full-time nanny for the Navy and Marine Corps Officers at the Norfolk Naval Station. While working on the base, she met and fell in love with a Marine, Ira Ellison, Sr., who she married and traveled with him from the east to the west coast and several states in between. “Mama Lu” as she was sometimes affectionately called, worked at Norfolk State University for over 25 years. She was originally hired to work in the student union grill and eventually transferred over to the main cafeteria staff. Mama Lu fed and cared about a multitude of students, sometimes feeding them with money out of her own pocket. Even though the grill only served lunch and supper, Mama Lu bought breakfast foods and cooked for the hungry students before her shift began. Every holiday, we still remember Mummy inviting 5 or more students home for meals at our house. One of Mummy’s greatest concerns was the fact that “those children still haven’t gotten their money for meals.” She was very creative when feeding “those children.” In 1971, Mummy became a member of St. Mark RZUA Church, when we moved next door to the church in Lambert’s Point. After several years, when ODU started expanding into the community, she moved to LaFayette Shores briefly and then to Liberty Park, where she became a member of Garret’s Community Baptist Church. Mummy attended and served faithfully at Garret’s until she became disabled and could no longer serve as a Deaconess and member of several boards. In her later years, Mummy was blessed to meet and fall in love again. She married Clem Barnard on October 9, 1992, who became the joy of her life, until his passing on August 21, 1999. Even though the paramedics called Mummy’s death at 1:00am on January 16th we know that our beloved mother transitioned on January 15th Clem’s birthday. Mummy leaves eight children, Iris James, Berreta Blick (Henry), Ira Ellison, Jr. (Bridgette), Barnard Ellison (Vickie), Eileen Ellison (Igwe), Charity Green (Clifton), Faith Jones (Shelton), and Jerome Williams (Carlette), and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great-great grandchildren to celebrate her life and share her lessons and memories. Mummy also leaves behind her special cousin, Patsy McClain, and some of her good girlfriends, Viletus Wiggins, Mary Cox, Gloria Winborne (fellow NSU ladies of the pots and pans), and Arlean Schmid, her late in life road partner. Mummy always said, “When I die, I don’t want any flowers other than eight yellow roses.”
