James Lee Wilkerson peacefully passed away on July 18, 2017. James, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, brother-in-law and friend, was the first born of 12 brothers and sisters to the late James Wilkerson and Naomi Hendricks Wilkerson in Southhampton County, VA. In 1969, James married the love of his life, Janie M. Jones, from Windsor, VA and they had two sons, Dennis and James Keith. James moved his family to Chesapeake, VA in 1977, where he resided for the remainder of his days. Family was paramount to James, and he worked diligently to support them. However, if you were his friend, he considered you family. He was exceptional man that was held in the highest regard by all that knew him. Family and friends often sought his counsel because of his straightforward honesty and wisdom, traits that were his calling card. James served faithfully in the Marine Corp, including multiple tours during the Vietnam War. James also was a dedicated employee until his retirement from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, where he was known for his exemplary work ethic. He was a community leader who was an active participant for years in civic league activities. James had many hobbies including hunting, fishing, landscaping and being a grandfather to Kiana and Donovan. He looked forward every year to the annual Father’s Day fishing trip and the beginning of deer hunting season. Those that knew him knew better than to schedule anything on either of those days. He was also a die-hard Redskin fan and loved to debate their status for hours at a time. James could best be described as a passionate and honest man that put his family first and respected and loved all people. Although he had many interests and hobbies, he enjoyed nothing more than a drive in the country in his F-150 with his wife and best friend of more than 48 years, Janie. He leaves to cherish his memory, the love of his life and his Queen, Mrs. Janie Jones Wilkerson; two sons: Dennis and wife Carolyn and James Keith and wife Alexis; 2 grandchildren, Kiana and Donovan. 11 brothers and sisters, Katherine Artis and husband Edward of Suffolk, VA; Mary Persons and husband Aubrey; Barbara Staten of Franklin, VA; Ernestine Bynum and husband Charles of Franklin, VA; Calvin Wilkerson of Emporia; Yvonne Food-Cook of Suffolk, VA; Shirley Ann Grant of Franklin, VA; JoAnne Branch of Courtland, VA; and Reginald Wilkerson and wife Celestine of Franklin, VA. He is predeceased by his brother, Andrew Wilkerson of Franklin, VA and sister Elaine Pope of Chesapeake, VA; and a host of nieces, nephews, five sister-in-laws, 1 brother in-law, and other relatives and beloved friends. James was cherished by many and will be missed. We love you Pop! In lieu of flowers, the Wilkerson family requests that a donation be made in our father's name, James L. Wilkerson to: The Sidney M.
