Mary Coralee Waddell Austin, 85, born January 27, 1933, peacefully passed away on Monday, February 5, 2018 at Sentara Leigh Hospital in Norfolk, VA. She heard the Lord softly calling her name and went to Glory with a smile on her face. She was predeceased by her parents, Lonnie and Mabel Jane Waddell. Additionally, she was predeceased by her husband of 51 years, James Jordan Austin, a son Paul Hayes, a daughter Shelia Hayes, four brothers (Lonnie, Johnny, Earl and Ernest) and 6 sisters (Lula, Josephine, Ruby, Dorothy, Mildred and Myrtle). Mary was born and raised in the Campostella section of Norfolk, VA where she completed the 11th grade, then married and raised her family of 5 children. She worked various positions before retiring as a Shipping Clerk after more than 30 years with the Norfolk Naval Base. Although Mary may have feared many things in her life, she did not fear handling her business. She was often heard saying “You need mother-wit and common sense” to make it in this world. Mary Austin was a member of St. Mark United Church in Berkley, where she attended faithfully for many years before her health began to fail her. Her memory will be forever cherished and honored by her surviving family members. Mary Coralee Waddell Austin is survived by her sister, Catherine Hill (Willie) of Chesapeake, VA; brothers Albert Waddell and David Waddell (Anne) of Philadelphia, PA; sons Anthony L. Hayes and James T. Austin (Monyetta) of Norfolk, VA; Kenneth F. Austin (Carmellita) of Columbia, SC; 5 grandchildren, Corey Hayes (Tonya), Jermain Davis, Alex Moye, Monyetta Danielle Austin and Shonte’ Austin; 13 great-grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
