Dannis Franklin Tillery, Jr. peacefully and quietly slipped into the arms of Jesus in the early afternoon on January 30, 2018, at the Veterans Hospital in Hampton, Virginia. He was born in Kinston, North Carolina to the late Dannis F. Tillery, Sr and Ruth Tillery. Dannis is preceded in death by his beloved mother Naomi Davis “Big Mama”. After graduating from Kempsville High School in Virginia Beach, Virginia, he spent one year studying at Norfolk State University and then enlisted in the United States Airforce where he served 17 years as a Military Policeman at various duty stations around the world. Upon leaving the Airforce, Dannis was employed at the Veterans Hospital in Washington, DC as a security officer. At the end of his employment there, he moved to Charles Towne, West Virginia and remained there until his health caused him to relocate to Virginia near his sisters. Dannis adored his older sister, even though he always accused her of being “bossy.” Because of his respect for her, he always listened. He was extremely protective of his baby sister and she often looked up to him with gratitude. Both sisters lovingly looked after Dannis from the beginning of his declining health, making numerous trips to West Virginia until his demise at the VA Hospital in Hampton, VA. Dannis leaves to mourn his passing, his sisters, Marionette T. Butts and Bernice Barnes (Frank, Sr.) of Chesapeake, VA; many nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and his foster brother Tyrone Freeman of Denver, CO.
