The Rev. Jake Manley, Sr. was born to the late Mr. Acie and Mrs. and Lucinda Manley in Rich Square, NC, and was raised in Jackson, NC. He received his early education in Northampton County, NC. Since 1974, Rev. Manley has served as the pastor of Bethany Baptist Church, Chesapeake, Virginia. His phi-losophy is that the church should serve the community from "The Cradle to the Grave". Under his anointed leadership, Bethany Baptist has experienced a tremendous growth in membership. Because of Rev Manley's devout commitment to serve Christ and his community, numerous ministries and programs have been set into place. Most notable is the Shower of Blessings Substance Abuse Ministry. An outreach ministry focused on transforming individuals away from lives of crime into productive citizens. This ministry which began as a conduit from the drug world to productive living, has launched into one of largest jail/prison ministries of South Hampton Roads. As a noted provider of clothing, food and shelter, Bethany Baptist acquired property (the Bethany House) to house those in need of temporary housing upon release of the penal system. Rev. Manley has also been actively involved in getting guns off the streets, reducing gang activities, and providing ways out of using and selling illegal drugs. His passionate call to stop the violence drew con¬cerned citizens to public crime prevention activities like a gun buy-back program and a fun high-tech teen center at the Clarence Cuffee Center. He is a 32nd Degree Mason and has served as the Asst. Grand Chaplain for Virginia. He has been recognized by many local, state and regional organizations for his civic and professional services. He has also served on the Board of Directors of Centura Bank, Roosevelt Memorial Gardens, Old Dominion General Baptist Asso-ciation, Mayor's Task Force for Housing, Society for the Prevention of AIDS in Minority's and the Police As-sisted Community Enforcement Board (PACE). Rev. Manley is a dedicated family man. He has been married to Audrey Chapman Manley for 69 years and is the father of Florence (William), Patricia (Oliver) and Jake Jr. (Valerie). He is predeceased by his sisters Frances Moody and Minnie Manley; brothers Robert Lee Manley, James Manley, William Manley and Austin Manley; grandsons, Andre’ Sean Manley and Patrick M. Smith I; He is survived by his grandsons Patrick M. Smith II and Shedrick Manley (Christina) Markus Huber, Martin Smith (Manuela); granddaughter Nakia Manley; great grandsons Keontae Means and Henry O. Smith; daughter-in-law Angelika M. Ciccone; long time friends Clyde and Joyce Turner; god daughter Linda H. English; god son Calvin Coley (Lynn); Confidant Simon and Earnestine Wood.

Deborah Hardwick (formerly Beaver) To the Manley Family: I've respected and admired Pastor Manley from the day I met him (as an niece by marriage, and I still miss him to this day! His warmth and Great Compassion for the Community-at-Large was an Inspiration to me and my Family. Rest in Eternal Peace Dear Uncle Jake.

On behalf of the Wade family from Scotland Neck, NC and Richard Wade, my father, who is now deceased) I pray that knowing how respected and loved Rev. Manley was will bring you relief from the pain of losing him. I didn't know him personally like my father, but I admired and respected all that he did for those who struggle daily with addictions. His program, Showers of Blessings was well respected by the legal system. His rest is so well deserved, but he will be missed tremendously.

Willie C. Burden, Jr. First of all I'd like to convey my deepest sympathies and condolences to the family, friends and loved ones of Rev. Manley and the members of Bethany Baptist Church...I know him to be a true and effective man of God. When I travelled from Atlanta to Norfolk for my mothers (Mary Matthews) funeral, Rev. Manley could sense my distraught state when I came to his office during the initial stages of planning my mothers funeral...Rev. Manley told me to sit down and spent thirty or so minutes strenghthening and encouraging me...I actually felt strengthened in my inner man by the time I left his office...a true man of God who my mother spoke very highly of up until her last days on earth. Thank you for sacrificing your life for the people of God.

Velber COVINGTON Harris I met Doc when I was 13yrs old....I remember thinking to myself this is the kind of man I would love to have for a father, brother, uncle, grandfather (just to name a few ). He was honest, kind, straight forward, the silent, strong type...it didn't take him long to win you over! Many times he would call and many times I called him...never was I neglected or ignored! Wow...what a man of God...what a minister, what a friend. I have grown from a teenager to an adult under his ministry and what a shepherd he was been . I miss him already. To the family I continue to pray for you...Doc truly spent his life doing what he was meant to do...his rest is well deserved ! We shall not forget the many lessons he taught us...

Lisa Williams & children Rev.Jake Manley wasn't just my pastor as I resided in Norfolk for twelve & half years. He was my father, counselor&friend. When I was in need spiritually & mentally my adopted father was there every step of the way.Jake Manley was a true man of GOD.To just to be under his teaching was a blessing.I will always be thankful for all of what he taught me.I will always keep close to my heart of several things one being his saying "The Cradle to the Grave",Rev.Manley giving me just two weeks to write & perform the youth dept.play "The Funeral"with 39 children of course with the lesture of if God calls you then you should be ready.Well we did it.Then another saying "Isn't my Hospitality looking good!Along with telling his beautiful wife how much he love her. Also, going to Six Flags for the children summer trip & him saying the children don't have a job so they travel, eat & hotel stay free;however, you parents work so you all can pay with saying those that can afford to & it so many more sayings like man don't work man don't eat.My pastor was always giving and attending. He was in deed a true man of God.He always acknowledged my children as Sis.Manley & his grandchildren. He was honest, truthful, generous, forgiving, loving and so much more of nothing but wonderful. Some of us at church use to asked daddy when was he going to rest & he would respond when he get to GLORY;well daddy you are there. Now rest job well done!I will always love & cherish all of your teachings and it hurts to know that you are physically gone but not spiritually.RIP you will be forever missed;however, never forgotten.

Rickey Rouse, Jr. I did not know Pastor Manley personally, but I always reverenced him for his work in the community! That is not something to be looked at lightly...God used him in a marvelous way to touch the lives of so many for the better. Lives of those who many others wouldn't have thought twice about. God Bless his memory, his wife, children & family, as well as the family of The Bethany Baptist Church! I know what it feels like to lose a Pastor...But God will be with you every step of the way! For even in this...He is still in control & will prove Himself to be more than able!!!
