Tai Miquel Shanklin was born in Columbus, Ohio on July 26, 1995 and became the third child of Gerald Shanklin and Dr. Mona Bryant-Shanklin. For everyone who knew Miquel, he was a quiet introspective person, but respectful and insightful. Things came easier to Tai than most people. He mastered math, science, and music with ease and we would many times find ourselves wondering about all the many gifts he would offer the universe. Tai was a member of the Chesapeake Chapter of Jack and Jill, Inc. and was involved in multiple volunteer and community service events and displayed leadership qualities. He had an array of intellectual and creative gifts, graduating from Great Bridge High School with honors and performing in its award winning orchestra. He was also an athlete, playing on the varsity football team and was recruited by Randolph Macon College in Ashland, Virginia. Tai served briefly in the United States Army and was stationed at Fort Jackson in South Carolina. Tai had a radiant smile that will be greatly missed by his mother and father, Gerald Shanklin and Dr. Mona Bryant-Shanklin, grandmother Margaret Carter, brother Gerald Kayin, sister Jamil Maree, nephew Jordan, aunt’s (Sharon, Tammy, Daphanie, Jackie, and Marilyn), uncles (Bernard, Stan, Joe, and Julius), multiple wonderful cousins, other family members, and a great friend, Hunter Gregory.

Janice Fleming Mona, I cannot begin to comprehend what you are going through with this loss. I want you to know you and your family are in our prayers.

Kalie Leone Tai was someone who would never fail to make me laugh. I played clarinet with him and we often were seated next to each other in the chair positions. He was really talented and we even used to video chat so we could help each other with some audition pieces. I have so many great memories with Tai in band and PE class and he always would notice if you were feeling down and try to cheer you up. I've missed Tai since I left town and will continue to miss his genuinely kind personality. Your family is in my thoughts and prayers.

Jessica Mathias I have known Tai since I was in middle school. He was my brother's best friend for many many years. He helped him through his dark times, my whole family loved Tai and we are all grateful of the memories we shared with him. He spent several holidays with my family. He was a great person to be around and it is hard to understand why this happened to such a beautiful and innocent soul. Thoughts and prayers are with the Shanklin Family. Rest in Peace Schmeemee. You are loved and missed.

Marissa Walker I had the pleasure of meeting Tai in middle school and I’ll nevrr forget how kind and genuine he was. He was always smiling and making people laugh. Tai and I had P.E. together and he was also in the band with me. He was a great clarinet player who truly had talent and passion for music. I will miss his friendship but will forever remember all the memories we made. He was an amazing person who was taken too soon. I am so sorry for your loss and your family is in my prayers. Never forget that he is with you all everyday.

Katy Valentine Dear Family of Tai, I had the pleasure of being close to Tai in middle school. I had transferred over from private school to great bridge middle in 6th grade. As you can imagine it was a scary experience for me coming from a small school of 50 people in my grade to a school of over 300 in my grade. I didn't know a single person. I met Tai in P.E. class and we instantly became friends. I will never forget how funny he was and how he always made me laugh! I distinctly remember getting Facebook for the first time because I think he told me it was cool and he was my very first Facebook friend! I remember laughing at the memories a couple years ago because we didn't know how to use Facebook and we would chat on it back and forth by posting on each other's walls back and forth saying just one worded things like HI and what's up. He was the most inclusive person, always made people feel comfortable. I don't know how my middle and high school career would of ended up without meeting him in P.E. my 6th grade year. I will never forget how he made me laugh and smile and his affect on other people. I will never forget how genuine and nice he was. I lost my little sister Kelly in 2011 and it was the hardest thing and I would ever wish upon anyone to experience the feeling of losing someone dear to you. I can't imagine what it is like to loose a child. But I watched my parents go through it. After all the years when I look up in the sky on a good day of when something good happens to me I can't help but to smile because I know it's my sister looking down on me and helping me. I know Tai knew my sister and I know they have found each other in heaven. Tai's memory will never be forgotten! Love, Katy Valentine

Anxhela Pere Tai was one of the kindest human beings I ever had the pleasure of knowing. We were great class mates and throughout our years together in school he was always the one that made everyone laugh. His smile was contagious and no matter what day it was, he always was warming and positive. He will forever be missed. My prayers go out to his loved ones. I know that Tai is watching over us now and I pray that his family finds peace.

Christian Anderson When I think of Tai, I smile. Thoughts of Tai lift up my heart. Years after the kids of Briarwood stopped running around playing the games of youth, I would see Tai walking by as I worked in the yard. He always made sure to catch my attention and give me a wave, a "Hi", and a great big Tai smile. It always brought me a little joy. I will miss Tai. I will always appreciate the little gifts he gave me and so many others by just being Tai. My children loved Tai and had only the fondest of thoughts about him always. Rest peacefully my friend. My deepest sympathies to Mona and Gerald.

Mrs. Jordan To The Family, I want to express my deepest sympathy for your loss. I also want to share the comfort of John 5:28,29 where we are promised that those who have fallen asleep in death have the hope of receiving a "resurrection" back to life. Life on an earth restored to a beautiful paradise. Psalms 37:11 says, "The meek will possess the earth and they will find exquisite delight in the abundance of peace." While we await that wonderful time please find comfort in these promises. While we await that wonderful time please find comfort in these promises.
