Bronx NY

On August 21st the Lord called Samuel Bea Jr. to his kingdom. Samuel Bea was born on August 26, 1932, to the late Marveline and Samuel Bea, Sr. at home in Harlem. He was predeceased by his son, Stephen. “Sammy B”, as he was affectionately called, attended the New York City public schools and was a graduate of DeWitt Clinton High School. He earned his BS degree in Business Administration from Fisk University in Nashville, Tennessee and completed a Masters degree in Public Administration from John Jay College in New York City. In Sammy’s early years, he was raised in the New York City Harlem River projects. His parents moved from the projects to “Sugar Hill”. It was there that he met his wife Victoria Julien. Little did they both know that they were enrolled in the same nursery school and had apparently met at the young age of five or six. While attending Fisk University, Sammy joined the Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. and was a member of the Pigskins, Inc. He was a staunch New York sports fan who rooted strong for the New York Giants, Mets and the Knicks. He was a boxing aficionado and would discuss the history of boxing and boxers with his buddies. When Jazz was the rage in the 1950’s, Sammy took up playing the saxophone with his buddy Jackie McClean and thought that he would be the next Miles Davis or Charlie Parker - that was a bust! As a resident of Community Planning Board 12 in the Bronx and a member of the 83rd Assembly District for over 30 years, he became the first District Manager of The Community Board in 1977. He served as District Manager until his retirement in 1996. After serving as District Manager for 29 years, Sam was elected to the 83rd District of the New York State Assembly. Most of Sam’s employment was in community service which included positions such as: Director of Community Services in the Westchester Community Opportunity Program Inc.; Executive Director, Mount Vernon Community Action Group; Program Administrator, Harlem Hospital Comprehensive Alcoholism Program; Deputy Executive, Associate Director and OJT Director, Urban League of Westchester; Manpower Coordinator, Yonkers, NY; Director Neighborhood Youth Corps, Greenburgh, NY; the first African-American Sales Specialist, Campbell Soup Sales Co. - Swanson Frozen Food Division; New York City Probation Officer and Case Worker. Sam received numerous awards and citations for his community service. Among them were the Bronx Borough President’s Citation Award, the New York City Mayor’s Citation Award and the Northwest Bronx Chapter NAACP Award. He was in the forefront of social activism attending the “1963 March on Washington” and jailed in support of the unjust shooting of Mr. Amadou Diallo by the New York City police in the Bronx. While working in Harlem, he would always stop and listen to Malcolm X on the corner of 125th Street; hence those similar activities instilled his stronger community concerns. Sam’s love of art led him to showcase many developing artists and to become a collector. His collection of African-American Christmas figurines, especially Santa Clauses, was a special treat for all to see. Sammy and Vicki moved to Virginia Beach, Virginia in 2002 where they established themselves in their community and neighborhood. He enjoyed meeting and socializing with his new Virginia friends. Sammy was very straightforward and had a quick wit that always made him the life of the party which endeared him to everyone that he met. His contributions to the Bronx community and his mentoring to others will be remembered throughout the years. Sam leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 55 ½ years, Victoria; daughter, Kim Bea-Anderson (Daniel); three grandchildren, Camryn, Sydney, and Tori; mother-in-law, Muriel Julien (100 years old); brother-in-law, Victor Julien (Mabeline); aunt, Hilda Stephenson (100 years old); cousins, Beverly Taylor, Bernard Edwards; Allan Stephenson (Deloris); Aubrey Edwards (Yvonne) and a host of other cousins, godchildren and dear friends.

Leonard & Rosebud Pitt Vicki, Kim and Family It goes without saying that because of my 63 year relationship with Sammy, this is very difficult to write. He was my brother, my friend, and the rock upon which I stood for support during some very difficult times. I know that his loss is impossible to measure. Rose and I want you guys to know that during our conversations over the past several years, he never failed to express his love and appreciation for his family. Vicki, I cannot end this without mentioning how much he loved and appreciated you for just being you, and for the excellent care, love and attention you provided. Now that he has entered larger life we must take comfort in the fact that he is at peace and that pain and suffering are no more. Please know that in his absence, Rose and I will continue to cradle you in in our arms of friendship.

M Guy Bragg Sammy, Didn't get to see you much in later years, but recall those interesting and relaxing moments early on. Great accomplishments over the years in helping our people. Now you can relax, pick up that horn again, and hook up with Jackie and Charlie for some lessons.

Michele Sam I will miss your light and life, and will hope for the luck to meet you again - for I am sure you are well inside Peter's pearly ones. You always had something funny and insightful to say. Victoria, You both have been the delight of my days when I am blessed enough to come visit. You are grounded and strong, and so attached to your family and friends. You both have led me through many deep conversations stretching through aging, race/sexism, the wars, family, God, among so many others. For your great company I am so thankful. Sam, your laugh lives on in my heart. May your pain be forever gone in His arms above.

Yvonne Leonard Vicki and Family, May this scripture bring you comfort: Psalm 34:18-20 NIV The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit. The righteous person may have many troubles, but the Lord delivers him from them all; he protects all his bones, not one of them will be broken.
