Stella Mae Smith resided at 1016 King Arthur Drive in Chesapeake, VA went home to be with the Lord in the early morning hour on January 6, 2018. She was in the comfort of her home with her daughter, Tameka Moore and granddaughter Stella Whitaker by her side. She was preceded in death by her husband William Henry Smith; her parents, Ashby Jordan and Mary Evelyn Francis; three sisters, Beatrice Jordan, Stumpy Jordan and Shirley Ann Harvey and one brother Malachi Jordan. Stella was born July 19, 1949 in Halifax County, NC to Ashby Jordan and Mary Evelyn Francis. She attended Browley High School. July 1965, Stella married Arthur James Whitaker, Sr and relocated to Norfolk, VA. October 1980, after fifteen years of marriage they decided to divorce. November 1986, Stella married William Henry Smith. Stella served 33 years at Sentara Norfolk General Hospital in the Department of Environmental Services where she retired as Supervisor of Environmental Services. Upon retirement, Stella started her own business, Stella Mae’s Janitorial Services. Stella was a woman of God and loved the Lord. She was an active member of First Baptist Church South Hill. Stella also was a member of the Order of Eastern Star, Faithful Few Chapter 034 and Daughters of Sarah Chapter 164. Stella was not only an entrepreneur, she also was a mother, granny, auntie and sister. In her spare time, she enjoyed spending time with her family and friends, working in her flower beds, cutting grass, edging and planting shrubs. She took great pride in beautifying the landscape around her home. Stella was also a great cook. She had a big heart and did not mind cooking meals for others. She would bake homemade desserts such as carrot cake, punch bowl cake and sweet potato cake. Stella fried turkeys during the holidays for others. One of her many specialities was her macaroni and cheese, it was highly requested at family events. Stella’ s resilience and kind hearted spirit touched all who came to know her. Stella was survived by: two sons; Arthur James Whitaker, Jr. and Shawn Adrian Whitaker, two daughters; LaTonya Denise Whitaker Perry and Tameka Lynn Whitaker Moore, two daughter-in-laws; Carol Denise Whitaker (Shawn) and Tonya Honora Whitaker (Arthur,Jr.) two grandsons; Shawn Adrian Whitaker, Jr. and Maurice Honora, six granddaughters; Chante Denise Whitaker, Jasmine Estelle Whitaker, Deonna Ashley-Marie Perry, Dametria Leila Perry and Stella Janay Whitaker and Delorita Lewis, one sister; Mary Odel Jordan (Tweet). Stella Mae leaves behind a host of cousins, nephews, nieces, relatives and friends to cherish her memories.

Garys' Tameka, Little Stella and Family, We are so sorry to learn of the passing of your Mom. Our hearts and thoughts are with you. She sure loved each and every one of you with all her heart. It is so sad to have to say goodbye to such a sweet lady. I thought about her the other day with happy thoughts and memories of her warmth and kindness. She will be missed so much, but remember we will see each other again one day. She is now in the company of other family members. You have one additional Angel watching over you.
