Jo Ann Hayes, affectionately called “Josie”, was the daughter of the late Joseph George Hayes and late Mamie Ballard Hayes. She was born on March 13, 1959 in Gates County, North Carolina. After the death of her father at the age of two, her mother Mamie moved Jo Ann and her sister Iris to Brooklyn, New York, where she spent her childhood and teenage years. Since she was a little girl, Jo Ann was a naturally gifted dancer. She refined these gifts and was accepted to the world-renown Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts, made famous by the film and television show “Fame”. While her attendance there she had the opportunity to be taught by and dance side-by-side with performers such as Alvin Ailey and Debbie Allen. She continued to study dance at Grambling State University, where she was a key dancer in the Orchesis Dance Company. She also modeled extensively and was chosen as Miss October 1978 in the Grambling State University Calendar Girl Beauty Pageant. Jo Ann spent many years in the workforce until her job at Portsmouth Drug Treatment Court led her to her passion and calling, the treatment of those with substance abuse issues. At that time, she decided to return to college to become a psychologist and professional counselor. Her multiple degrees include a Bachelor of Science in Psychology with a focus in Substance Abuse Treatment, two Master of Arts degrees, one in Human Services Counseling and the other in Professional Counseling, and a Master of Science in Applied Psychology. Her licenses and certifications include but are not limited to Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Mental Health Professional (LMHP), Master Addiction Counselor (MAC), and Certified Substance Abuse Counselor (CSAC). In addition to being an alumna of Grambling State University, she is also an alumna of both Regent University and Liberty University. During her leisure time, she delighted in spending time updating and enjoying her flower garden. Although Jo Ann was very accomplished professionally, what was of utmost importance to her was her faith and her family. She was a deeply spiritual woman, always professing and knowing that Jesus Christ was her Lord and Savior. Jo Ann was also a member of Elim Church of Hampton Roads where she was lovingly known as “Mother Hayes”. She was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother and friend --- always showing love and dedication to her family. Jo Ann always offered a listening ear, sound advice and an open door to all who needed her. Literally right until the end, she was busy encouraging others despite her ferocious and brave battle with cancer. Leaving behind to cherish her memory is her Fiancé, Mr. Harry “Rip” Johnson; one sister, Iris “Muffin” Elaine Hale of Virginia Beach, Virginia; three daughters, Tara Ann Hayes of Alexandria, Virginia, Maiya Elaine Hayes of Portsmouth, Virginia, and Amanda Leigh Hayes of Portsmouth, Virginia. Jo Ann’s pride and special joy were her two grandchildren, Kori Alexandre Lambert and Adina Elaine Sessoms, both of Portsmouth, Virginia. Jo Ann also leaves behind a host of cousins, relatives and friends whom she thought of as sisters and brothers, all too numerous to name but near and dear to her and her family’s heart.
