Samuel Cumbo known as Sammy was born July 27, 1942 to William
and Florida Cumbo in Jackson, North Carolina. He went home to be
with the Lord on Tuesday, January 30, 2018.
Sammy received his education from Northhampton Public Schools.
He received Christ at an early age. He relocated to Portsmouth
Virginia at the age of 18 and joined St. Thomas Baptist Church. He
became a Sanitation Truck Driver for the City of Portsmouth for over
40 years. He also worked over 40 years as a part time janitorial crew
leader with numerous contractors at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard.
Sammy married Virginia Flood Cumbo on October 17, 1964. To this
union was two children; Samuel G. Cumbo (Hampton, VA) and Tracy
M. Cumbo (Portsmouth, VA). He leaves to cherish his memories:
daughter, Casandra Jones; (grandsons) Darnell Jones, Michael Jones,
Michael G. Robertson, Kevon D. Cumbo, William D. Cumbo; (great
grandchildren) Kira Jones, Chloe’ N. Vinson, August M. Robertson,
Amari M. Robertson; (sisters) Flora A. Cumbo, Veronica D.
Williamson, Barbara Cumbo Jackson, Carolyn Cumbo Jones (Mitch
Mitchell) and Sylvia Bishop; (brothers) Daniel D. Cumbo, Tony M.
Cumbo, Charles Cumbo and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and
friends. He was also preceded in death by his parents: William S.
Cumbo, Florida Cumbo; brother, Jordan Mason Cumbo and cousins,
Jesse Cumbo Jr. and Jackson B. Cumbo, Sr.
Sammy was known to turn up his oldies but goodies and dance across
the floor or car pouch after he got off his part time job at night. His
favorite sport was boxing. His hobby was hunting with his cousins in
North Carolina.
His beautiful charming smile was contagious along with his laughter.
He always made time to spend with his family to make beautiful
memories. He will be truly missed by all of us.
