Derrick Alphonso Blackmon quietly went from labor to reward on Wednesday, March 21, 2018 at his residence. He was born on March 12, 1954 in Los Angeles, California to the late Joe Blackmon and Annie Blackmon. He graduated from Andrew Jackson High School in Jacksonville, FL in 1972 and immediately joined the United States Navy. Derrick fulfilled many duties such as a Radioman, instructor and member of the inspection team for naval vessels. Derrick was known as a subject matter expert in his field and was placed in various leadership roles. One of his greatest accomplishments was obtaining the Master Training Specialist (MTS) qualification, the highest-level competency for an instructor. After serving in the Navy for twenty-one years, he retired as a Senior Chief. Following his retirement, he attended an apprenticeship program to become a Sheet Metal Mechanic. He worked in this field for several years. He would later work for Accent Medical Transportation Services until his demise. Derrick was known amongst his co-workers as a reliable asset. He was a confirmed member of Calvary Revival Church. Derrick had a passion for reading the Word of God and enjoyed sharing his knowledge with others. He had a heart for the Jewish community and advocated providing financial support for the nation of Israel. Derrick married the love of his life, Gail Monts on December 2, 1985. Together they raised two children. He displayed his love for his family by always putting them first and being a good provider. He leaves to cherish his life, a devoted wife of thirty-two years, Gail; one daughter, Tianna Blackmon; one son Dante Reese; one grandson Keymari Reese; one sister Michelle Sibley and husband Rickie Sibley; one brother Tyrone Blackmon and wife Tiffany Blackmon; a host of in-laws, nieces, nephews, cousins and other loved ones and friends.
