On Tuesday, August 8, 2017, the “Angel of Death” came in with a twinkling eye and removed from our physical presence our beloved mother, grandmother, great grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend, Mrs. Velma Gardner. Velma was born January 4, 1944, in Norfolk County, Virginia to Frank and Mollie Manley, both deceased. She is predeceased by her husband, Richard Gardner; brothers, James Manley, Sr., Frank Manley, Jr., Otis Manley, Sr., and Samuel Spruill; and two sisters, Delores Gordon and Virginia Burfoot. Velma worked for the Norfolk Naval Air Station and the Norfolk Naval Base for many years and received several certificates for her outstanding service. She was a faithful member of First Baptist Church West Munden, Chesapeake, Virginia, where she served as President of the Combined Usher Board, and was a member of the New Gospel Choir. Velma leaves to cherish her memory, daughter, April Michelle Manley; two grandsons, Derrick and Demetrius Manley of Chesapeake, Virginia; two great grandchildren, whom she dearly loved, Carter and Morgan; and her special nephew, LaVelle Harvey, who loved and cared for her until the very end. Further, she is survived by four sisters, Mrs. Dorothy Whitmore of Chesapeake, Virginia, Mrs. Olivia Ruffin (Melvin) of North Carolina, Mrs. Thomasine Gant of North Carolina, and Mrs. Carolyn Everett (Roosevelt) of Chesapeake, Virginia; four brothers, Herman Manley (Alva) of Norfolk, Virginia, Senator Lionell Spruill of Chesapeake, Virginia, Larry Spruill of Chesapeake, Virginia, and Johnnie Dotson Spruill of Suffolk, Virginia; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Dr. Michael Camp and Staff Mrs. Velma Gardner was very well liked in our office. No matter how she was feeling she would always make us laugh. She was a loving character and will be greatly missed in the office.

I can't stop crying I wish you were here but I don't want you to be in pain and suffer so I am going have to trust God and it will be well with my soul I love you forever ❤️Catrice Bethea
