Step by step along this pilgrim journey, Our Lord and Savior leads the way. No matter what may be the task, God the builder and maker has the final say. The beginning line of the chorus of “Welcome Home,” gives testimony to the life by which James Baker “JB” sang about daily. He was “living this life just to live again; Jesus welcomed him home.” Our beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle and friend, slipped quietly into a peaceful, eternal rest on Wednesday, March 14, 2018 at 2:25 a.m. at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. JB was born on June 21, 1939 to the late Madeline and the late Sam Baker in Chesapeake, Virginia. He was predeceased by his two sisters Harriet and Mildred and four brothers Alton, Fred, Cecil, Sr., and Welton. He received his education at Carver High School, Chesapeake. He was a wide-load mobile home truck driver by occupation for several local dealers and retired in 1990. Having been reared in a Christian home by his Aunts Essie Spence and Sarah Nichols, and Grandmother Missionary Rebecca Nichols, he accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior and became a member of First Baptist Church – Campostella, at an early age. Later, he joined First Baptist Church – West Munden. There he served faithfully on several church committees and ministries to include the President of the Male Chorus, Vice President of the New Gospel Choir, Food Bank Ministry, Daily Vacation Bible School, Annual Christmas Program, President of the Southside Male Chorus Union, and Tri-City Community Singers, Mr. Birthday Seasonal Tea 1993, and Chairperson of the Church Anniversary. JB shared a life-long love for music. He fellowshipped with several churches attending choir unions, banquets, and many other special occasions. He received great joy and so much pleasure when he was singing with Providence United Church of Christ, Mount Zion Baptist Church (Berkley), and First Baptist Church (Campostella), and First Baptist Church (West Munden) in the Southside Male Chorus Union. JB was always ready to lend a helping hand with a friendly smile. He enjoyed cooking tasty noodles, putting up Christmas decorations and cleaning the yard. To fulfill his civic duty, he was a member of the former Berkley Civic League, City of Norfolk Elections (Berkley), former Mighty Horsemen Social and Savings Club (Berkley), and the Silver Strands Senior Club of Chesapeake. JB was a strong supporter of the Estherine J. Harding Endowed Scholarship for needy Norfolk State University students, Army ROTC – Old Dominion University, and the Order of the Eastern Star, PHA, VA. He was an avid Washington Redskins fan. Family members remaining to remember his homegoing include his wife of 34 years, Linda E. Baker (Lynn), daughter Faith Baker-Hightower (Derrick) and son Michael Sivills, brothers Vernon Baker of Norfolk and Ruben Baker of Tacoma, Washington, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, host of other relatives, and friends. In closing, “JB” we have loving memories to forever hold in our hearts. Thank God for you and your inspiring legacy. We humbly bow to our Father’s will. You were certainly one of a kind….participatory, particular, and highly peculiar; now peacefully at rest. Lovingly Submitted, The Family

Eure and Loretta Stallworth Linda and family, as we reflect upon fond memories of “JB” during our times of worship , and working together for many years, we want you to know that we loved him, and knew him to be a hard worker on the job, and always laboring for the Lord! He was also a part of the “Mighty Horsemen” earlier in life. We loved him, and will miss him. Our thoughts and prayers are with you. “We are confident , I say, and willing rather to be absent from the body, and to be present with the Lord” ( 2Corinthians 5:8, KJV).
