Early Wednesday morning, March 22, 2017 an angel of mercy silently and peacefully came and gave our beloved WHALEY LAMONT SMITH eternal rest. He was born on April 16, 1976 to the late Regina G. Smith and Whaley E. Smith, Jr. of Portsmouth, Virginia. He was a 1994 graduate of I. C. Norcom High School and member of the I. C. Norcom 1993 Group AAA Division 5 State Championship Football Team. He continued playing football at Virginia State University. He was an Assistant coach with the Spotsylvania School System and coached at W. E. Waters middle school in Portsmouth, VA. He was employed with the City of Portsmouth in the Parks Department as Equipment Operator II. He was also employed with Tranquility Manor in Portsmouth. His family and all that knew him will truly miss his pleasant smile and funny personality. He was a very humble, caring and loving person. He was affectionately called "Fess" by his friends. He leaves to cherish his memory one daughter, Nia M. Smith; two sons, Ian M. and Rey M. Smith of Rocky Mount, NC; father, Whaley Smith, Jr. of Portsmouth, VA; one sister, Amanda C. Simms (David) of Portsmouth, VA; one niece, Yu’Shawnda Simms, of Portsmouth, VA; one nephew, Davonta Simms of Portsmouth, VA; one aunt, Linda White of Chesapeake, VA; four uncles, David Smith of Springfield, MD; Timmy Smith, Stanford (Geraldine) Granger and Rodney (Erma) Granger of Portsmouth, VA; special companion and friend, Marcy Mitchell of Suffolk, VA; great nephew, cousins and friends.

Linda To the Family. Losing a love one in death is a trying time for all. I just want to give the family some comfort and hope from God's word, which gives the assurance that one day we will see our dear love ones again. ACTS 24:15 And I have a hope toward God, which hope these(men) themselves also entertain, that there is going to be a resurrection of both the righteuos and the unrighteous. Certainly while we await for these wonderful promise, I hope the family truly find comfort knowing this wonderful hope from Gods word.

Erika Thompson To the family of Lamont, please know that you have my deepest condolences. He was such a good guy with a big heart. He was always laughing and smiling. The last time that I saw him, it seemed like no time had passed since we had last seen each other although it had been years. He just gave me a hug and asked me how I was doing. He will be greatly missed and always remembered. With love and prayers, Erika (Stephenson) Thompson
