Born on June 19, 1958, Thomas M. O’Neal was the only child of the late Luella Dudley O’Neal and the late Thomas O'Neal. They established a home for Tom in the Robert’s Park section of Norfolk, Virginia. Tom graduated from Norview High School in 1976, and he enrolled at Norfolk State University where he completed a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communications in 1981. Tom made history at NSU as a member of the team that facilitated the sign-on of WNSB-FM. Tom brought listeners the jazz hits of the 1980’s and live play-by-play coverage of the NSU Spartans Football program. He was a proud member of the broadcasters honor society Alpha Epsilon Rho and the National Association of Black Journalists. From live radio broadcasts to live local television newscasts, Tom worked as a videotape editor for WAVY-TV in Portsmouth, Virginia and local news outlets WJBK-TV and WKBD-TV in Detroit, Michigan. It was in the Motor City that Tom developed his loyalty to sports organizations in Detroit. From the Detroit Lions to the Detroit Pistons, and the Detroit Red Wings, Tom was a devoted fan of the teams that made the Motor City proud. Tom spent his last years back in Hampton Roads where he cheered for the Washington Redskins, the Norfolk Tides, and the Norfolk Admirals. In his hometown, Tom was employed by WTKR-TV as a Digital Signal Technician. He also provided transportation services for Orange Peel customers, and for clients at the Endependence Center in Norfolk, Virginia. Returning to his radio roots, Tom hosted a live webcast titled “Tom on the Radio” where he explored topics from sports to pop culture and health. Tom passed away peacefully on the afternoon of December 12, 2017, at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. He leaves to mourn his passing, Godmother Shirley Waters of Norfolk and her family members, the NSU broadcasting community, and a host of fellow broadcast professionals across the country. Loved ones offer thanks to the professionals at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center, Chesapeake Health & Rehabilitation Center, and Chesapeake Emergency Medical Services.

Steve Baxley Tom, while you leave this mortal soil with your footprints of memories left for all to bask in, there comes a new journey, one where there is no end but always going forward and guided by the hand of god. You touched so many of us with your friendship and good vibes.. Every time we look to the heavens and see a special shine on a star, we know that you are making sure we cherish and celebrate life!

The Edmonds Family It is such a sad time when we have lost someone we love in death. Seldom can we find the words to console the pain. The Bible brings us much comfort. Revelation 21:3, 4, and 1 Corinthians 15:26 lets us know that God will do away with all causes that we have for suffering, as well as sickness and death. Knowing this has always comforted us and it is our hope that these thoughts will comfort you and your family as well. To learn more, please visit www.jw.org.

Ellen Harris Tom you have your wings now. Thank you for being part of my life NSU days. You called me Regina’s body guard. You had such a great sense of humor. You supported Regina all the way to her ceremony at UVA and she took care of you til the end. Glad we talked last month. Thank you for the memories.
