Odessa Manson Anderson, affectionately known as “Gamma”, was born on Thursday, March 25, 1926 to the late Haywood Scott and the late Ada Manson; delivered by her Great Aunt Tempie Manson-Williams, Midwife, in Williamston, North Carolina. She is pre-deceased by her husband, Robert Lee Anderson, four children, Barbara Aminta Anderson, Michael Warren Anderson, Robert Ellsworth Anderson, and Jennifer Lorraine Anderson-Chrisp; two brothers; Samuel and Marshall Scott. Gamma was blessed by God to have lived 9 decades. When asked what her secret was, she replied “God, her loving husband and the love of all her children.” As a child she began developing her character as an individual of compassion, dedication and commitment. She attended E.J. Hayes, formerly Williamston Colored School from the 1st grade through the 12th grade and she only missed 1 day of school. At the age of 17, Gamma relocated to Freemont Street in Norfolk, Virginia where she gained employment with Howard Cleaners on 35th Street in Norfolk. There she met, dated and accepted the marriage proposal from Robert Lee Anderson, Jr. and was wed on September 17, 1945. To this union 13 children were born. After her last child was born, she decided to pursue her passion of becoming a nurse and became certified as a Licensed Practical Nurse in the state of Virginia. She was an employee of DePaul Hospital in Norfolk, Virginia where she worked 33 years. The last six years of her Nursing career, she served in the Emergency Room as a Tri-age Nurse. There she became everybody’s favorite Nurse. Gamma was truly an earth angel who extended unconditional love to everyone she met. She accepted the Lord Jesus Christ and was baptized at a very early age and has always remained dedicated to God and the local Church. She was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Williamston, North Carolina; New Calvary Baptist Church, Norfolk, Va., Gideon’s Riverside Fellowship, both under the leadership of Dr. Milton A. Reid; and New Covenant Fellowship Baptist Church, Rev. Clyde L. Doxey, Jr., Pastor. As a dedicated member of New Covenant, she served in various capacities: Deaconess, Pastor’s Aide, Missions, and the Women’s Ministry. She loved her pastor and church dearly and was a willing and active supporter wherever needed until her health began to decline. She leaves to carry on her legacy of love; 1 sister, Annis Powell, New York; nine children: four sons, Kevin Anderson (Ellen), Keith Anderson (Natalie), Darryl Anderson, Wilford Anderson all of Norfolk, Va.; and a beloved adopted son, Albert Chrisp (Tywanna), Baltimore, Md. Five daughters; Cheryl Anderson, Dortha Anderson, Geral Collins (Tony), Manya Brown (Charles) and Myra Patterson (Joseph), all of Norfolk, Va.; three beloved adopted daughters, Valerie Anderson, Norfolk, Va.; Monica Marrow, Va. Beach, Va.; and Marcia Threats, Navarre, Fl. 30 Grand-children and 64 Great-grandchildren.
